ABOUT THE CENTRE:

The Centre for Advancement of International Law (CAIL) of Symbiosis Law School Hyderabad is dedicated to foster various dynamics of the international law. The contemporary situation makes every individual, States, Non-States entities being the subject matter of International law. Today, we are living in a globalized world where every State is bound by international norms, treaty obligations concerning not only international cooperation but also for international trade & commerce, international transport, maritime along with international relations with other States. The role of International law or Law of Nations not only regulates cooperation among Nations but, it also has a great influence on common people concerning business, migration, terrorism, human-rights, privacy etc where international law comes to rescue. The Centre also identifies the significance of the study of multi-disciplinary approach in understanding and interpreting various international conventions and drafts. The Centre mainly focus on exploring various international rules, conventions, texts, cases, reports etc and impart the aspirants with gaining knowledge. The Centre also endeavors towards contributing the knowledge sharing platform with the involvement of expertise and experienced legal luminaries. The Centre aims to promote and create awareness among not only law students but also other stakeholders and to bridge gaps in various aspects. The Centre for Advancement of International Law (CAIL) provides a unique platform to Scholars, Academicians, Research organizations and students to discuss legal challenges and research areas to achieve greater benefits. We believe in oneness as our motto is vasudhaiva kutumbakam which means justice, rationality, and order must prevail in a Just society.


OBJECTIVE OF THE CENTRE

  • To promote the emerging areas in the International law.
  • To foster research on various international areas.
  • To acquaint students with the dynamic nature of International Law by way of peer-to-peer discussions.
  • To organize competitions, seminars, conferences, guest lectures and research projects in fields of International Law.
  • To initiate collaboration with various centres and organizations across India and abroad to explore this field of law in further depth.

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED BY THE CENTRE:

  1. Webinar on the United States Sanctions against the International Criminal Court’ conducted 17th April 2021.

    CAIL organised its second event of 2020 in the form of a webinar. The topic of the webinar was ‘Cape Town Convention and Protocol on Aircraft Equipment: Harmonisation of Commercial Laws”. The speaker was Dr Aisha Sharfi who completed her PhD. on legal regulations surrounding the financing of aircrafts under Cape Town Convention from West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences (WBNUJS) and currently is an Assistant Professor of Law at Alliance University, Bengaluru. The proposal for the event was presented by the centre in the initial week of September and the approval was given on 9th September, 2020. The webinar was scheduled on 27h September 2020. The event started at 3 PM with pleasantries being exchanged. Our member Mr. Harshit Singh was the moderator and did an excellent job of conducting the event. He was able to ensure that everything ran smoothly and also took up participants’ insightful questions at the end. The webinar had an overall participation of 25 students across different batches. Dr. Aisha began the session with a brief explanation of international conventions and protocols in general, differentiating them from the Cape Town convention. She then discussed the need for the unification and harmonisation of these laws, as well as differentiating between the two terms in the context of conflict of laws. Following this, the very purpose of the Cape Town convention was discussed, which was to solve the problem of financing and acquiring certain high-value mobile equipment while defining the same in relation to Aviation law as well.

  2. Webinar conducted on the topic “Erga Omnes Obligation” on 15th September 2020.

    CAIL came up with its first event in 2020 in the form of a webinar. The webinar was on the topic of Erga Omnes Obligation and was taken by a well accredited assistant professor Mr. Atul Alexander of WBNUJS. The event was thought about in the initial week of September and got its approval on 15th September 2020. The webinar was scheduled on 20th September 2020. The event started at 10 am with pleasantries being exchanged. Our member Ms. Aarushi was the moderator and did an excellent job of conducting the event. She was able to carefully maintain the time and conclude the webinar in a punctual manner. The webinar had an overall participation of 40 students across different batches. Mr. Atul divided his presentation into two parts, one being how international law operates and second what is Erga Omnes. He also confined his talk plainly to the field of Public International Law. He started by giving a brief introduction into what international law is. He distinguished international law with domestic law and explained how domestic law was vertical in nature because it is controlled by a sovereign, however that was not the case in international law.International law operates in a horizontal manner and is based on consent. The state can give consent to either of the three types of obligations –

    i.Unilateral obligation
    ii.Bilateral obligation
    iii.ErgaOmnes obligation

  4. CHASE, a reality TV quiz show conducted on 3rd of October, 2019.

    The Centre organised its first-ever quiz, based on the module of CHASE, a reality TV quiz show, on the 3rd of October, 2019. The quiz was centred around various topics of international law, including laws regarding outer space, gender sensitisation, criminal law, the United Nations, etc.

  5. Judgment Deliberation Competition held on the 14th of August, 2019.

    The Judgment Deliberation Competition organised by the Centre for Advancement of International Law was organised and held on the 14th of August, 2019. The objective behind the event was to create an environment of debate and discussion amongst the students about the recent International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) judgment on the death penalty order in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case raging between India and Pakistan.




  6. Guest Lecture on International Criminal Law and Faculty Development Programme conducted 22nd and 23rd February 2019.

    Guest Lecture on International Criminal Law and Faculty Development Programme was organised by the Centre on 22nd and 23rd February 2019. The Guest Speaker for the day was Dr Saroj Rajan, visiting scholar and the ICCR India Chair, visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Law.

  7. Group Discussion conducted on 12th February 2019.

    Group Discussion on the topic “Impact of Rafale Deal on Upcoming Lok Sabha Elections,” was organized by the Centre on 12th February 2019.




  8. Seminar on International Maritime Law and Arbitration organized on 14 September 2018.

    Seminar on International Maritime Law and Arbitration was organised by the Centre on 14th September 2018. The Guest Speaker for the day was Mr VJ Mathew, Senior Advocate at High Court of Kerala, Founder of VJ Mathew & Co., Kochi, Vice- President of Indian Maritime Board and the Chairman of Kerala Maritime Board.

  9. Statute-Reboot was organised by the Centre from23rd to 24th July 2018.

    Statute-Reboot was organised by the Centre from23rd to 24th July 2018. The event received an overwhelming 20 registrations in one day of releasing the form, from all batches of 2018-23, 2017-22, 2016-21, and 2015-20. The students were supposed to present their ideas and amendments to the chosen statutes (UN Charter/ Geneva Convention Protocol I/ Kyoto Protocol) by way of articles, PowerPoint presentations, skits, etc.

  10. Netflix and Debate was organized by the Centre on 27th and 28th March 2018.

    Netflix and Debate was organized by the Centre on 27th and 28th March 2018. It was the first internal debate on International Law by the Centre. The teams had to debate on a motion based on an episode from a famous Netflix show, by analyzing its legal, economical, political, moral, philosophical and social aspects on an international-themed forum.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Centre for Advancement in International Law (CAIL) was a Chapter in International Law Students Association (ILSA). ILSA is a non-profit association of students and lawyers dedicated to the promotion of international law. It provides students with opportunities to study, research, and network in the international legal arena.
